Welcome to NVWF

The Northern Virginia Wrestling Federation (NVWF) is an all-volunteer organization founded by four clubs in 1966 to promote wrestling in the Northern Virginia area. Today, the NVWF comprises over twenty wrestling clubs with more than 1,000 coed wrestlers aged 5 to 15 from 12 different cities and towns across 11 Virginia counties.

NVWF emphasizes safety, sportsmanship, and fun. The Fairfax County Department of Recreation honored NVWF with a Community Service Award for “enriching the lives of Fairfax County citizens by providing opportunities for quality amateur athletic competition.”

For the winter season, clubs begin registration in mid-September to prepare for winter practices starting in early November, aligning with the high school season. Each club operates independently regarding registration timeframes, costs, practices, and schedules. Please contact individual clubs for specific registration details.

NVWF requires wrestlers to register with USA Wrestling for secondary medical insurance coverage. Parents or guardians must also register their children with both NVWF and their respective clubs.

NVWF hosts competition events from December through February throughout Northern Virginia. A final tournament, featuring wrestlers who qualify, takes place in late February or early March. The NVWF collaborates with Fairfax County Public School Athletic Trainers to provide professional medical care at tournaments.

Wrestling is one of the oldest and most esteemed sports globally, with roots tracing back to ancient civilizations. It involves two competitors who attempt to control each other through various grappling techniques, including throws, takedowns, joint locks, pins, and other holds.

  • Freestyle Wrestling: A popular international style allowing the use of legs in offense and defense.
  • Greco-Roman Wrestling: Focuses on upper-body techniques, prohibiting holds below the waist.
  • Folkstyle Wrestling: Common in American high schools and colleges, emphasizing control and pinning the opponent.
  • Physical Fitness: Wrestling enhances strength, agility, balance, and endurance.
  • Mental Toughness: Wrestlers develop discipline, resilience, and strategic thinking.
  • Character Development: The sport promotes sportsmanship, respect, and perseverance.
