Eighteen golds, three disciplines, and a qualification path that runs through the 2027 worlds in Las Vegas.

Wrestling has been on the programme of the modern Olympic Games from the start, with interruptions and arguments that are their own history. The current picture is easier to hold. Men compete in freestyle and Greco-Roman. Women compete in freestyle. Six weights each. Eighteen golds.

A place is not a reputation

An athlete does not qualify by being famous. A national team earns a place at a specific weight, then nominates the wrestler. On the road to Los Angeles in 2028, the senior world championships in Las Vegas in September 2027 are scheduled to award places to teams that medal in the Olympic weights. Continental championships, ranking events and later qualifying tournaments fill the rest of the field.

The exact quotas are a chart that changes in the footnotes. The sporting point is stable. 2027 is not a rehearsal. The ranking piece is the argument against treating every winter tournament as if it already were Las Vegas.

World championships between Games remain the annual summit. They crown more weights than the Olympics. A gold at a non-Olympic weight is a world title. When we cover Astana in 2026, we are covering a world championship. The Astana page has the dates. The Games do not retroactively shrink it.

  • Men's freestyle, six Olympic weights.
  • Greco-Roman, six Olympic weights.
  • Women's freestyle, six Olympic weights.
  • 2027 senior worlds in Las Vegas: scheduled to start awarding places for 2028.
  • A world title and an Olympic place are related and not identical.
